Coastal Cube

The launch of the “Coastal Cube” was held on 21st April at Carrickphierish Library in Co. Waterford, celebrating seashores, their plants and marine animals.

Spraoi’s Coastal Cube is an interactive installation made by students of Waterford Youthreach, facilitated by Spraoi Waterford. It forms part of ACT Waterford’s Between Land and Sea project.

We were delighted to welcome Cllr. Séamus Ryan to unveil the Cube at Carrickphierish Library on 21 April.

AJ Barrisy, Coordinator of Waterford Youthreach, commented, “This project just fit in with what we’re trying to achieve. We’ve been involved in the environment, involved in the community, and involved in a creative way. Climate change is such a big issue and we just see what’s happened in the world. Anything to do that improves our environment, improves our community, any project that integrates that is very, very welcome.”

Hannah Carbery, Administrator of Waterford Spraoi, said, “We felt it was really important to honour children and young peoples sensitivity to the world around them. Especially in regards to climate change and how important young peoples voices are in enacting positive change towards our planet.”

Youthreach students were invited to listen to an accompanying audio story, Creepie the Crab and the Periwinkles, narrated by Nick Kavanagh, creating a rich multi-sensory experience for the community. “He really captures the sense of hope and wonder that the story is conveying.” added Carbery.

Mary Conway, Waterford City & County Librarian, said: “We hope it inspires curiousity, creativity, and enjoyment for all who experience it.”
